Obtaining clear photographic images of the retina is crucial in diagnosing and treating many vision threatening diseases. However, equipment used to obtain retinal images is large and primarily relegated to doctors’ offices. Rochester-based Lumetrics, Inc. plans to change this paradigm with help from collaborators at FEI, Eyeon Therapeutics and ASE Optics Inc. And the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is backing the effort.

Measuring pericardial and other collagenous tissue has always been a challenge for those in the medical field. However, the Automated X/Y Tissue Scanning System is leading the way in mapping three-dimensional thicknesses. With the data derived from this non-contact, non-destructive scanning system, you can create a safer, properly functioning product, improve inspection time, dramatically reduce costs, and ultimately improve customer satisfaction.
When you can easily measure this tissue, the guesswork is taken out of determining where the thickest and thinnest areas of the tissue are. Thickness plays a critical role in functionality of tissue based products. The Tissue Scanning System can be integrated with other components to configure a fully automated system.
The Food and Drug Association (FDA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) hold strict compliance guidelines on all medical products to validate their safety for use in humans. This system will assure quality control and proper functioning in the products being produced.
The Tissue Scanning System is more accurate than the outmoded system of touch-gauge measuring, a manual, labor-intensive system that puts pressure on the naturally uneven, sterile tissue surface being measured, resulting in an inaccurate thickness measurement.
By contrast, with the rapid, non-contact measurement of the Tissue Scanning System, the irregular surface of the product can be mapped while still maintaining a sterile environment. The tissue can be measured in a saline solution to maintain hydration and consistency, or out of solution to measure the relationship between dehydration rate and thickness.
Data is available instantaneously on the display in numeric graphical form and can be downloaded to a file or exported to an external database for further analysis.

What is Optical Interferometry?
The principle of interferometry is the interaction of reflected light from materials with slightly different Indices of Refraction. The diagram attached explains it quite well. For more information on Lumetrics' technology.
Why is Optical Interferometry the best type of thickness measurement for some materials?
Optical Interferometry is a reliable form of thickness measurement. It is the best form of thickness measurement for otherwise hard to measure materials. Medical products can pose a challenge to many inspection systems. The medical products that are especially tricky to measure are those products composed of soft material or variable in shape and size.
In order to accurately measure for example, a medical balloon, you would need to know the wall thickness, concentricity, and ovality to gauge if the critical operation of the balloon is hindered by defects in the product. A medical balloon that is not properly inspected can pose a risk- a very costly risk when being used in humans. As far as industrial applications go, it's necessary to measure glass, food packaging, adhesives, and electronic components. Think of the vacuum-sealed Chicken you can get at Wegmans. Would you want to eat Chicken that had a defect in the packaging? Would it even be safe to eat? Our technology allows for the accurate real-time measurement of these products to ensure safety in the world around us. Our technology can also be integrated into the manufacturing process to cut costs. Another material that needs to be inspected (and can be inspected very well using our technology) is a contact lense. These can be measured to ensure the fit and comfort that the customer demands. Without this type of measurement, nobody would really know if these products were otherwise safe or fit for use. We've found that the principal of Optical Interferometry allows us to provide superior measurement solutions to our customers and any consumer that comes into contact with that product.
